FIRST SNOWFALL

Upon awakening today
my eyes were filled with great delight.
They met the most divine display —
a world painted milky white.

It was a cozy quilt of snow
which piled up in banks head high
and still more came. It fell so slow
there seemed a limitless supply.

A couple hurried down the lane,
a squirrel darted up a tree,
and what before had seemed mundane
I gazed at now adoringly.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods?

I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

- Lord Alfred Tennyson, In Memoriam
